Well, where do I start. This was an experience I know I'm going keep in my memory bank forever. My New York Fashion Week experience was more like New York Fashion Day. But I still gained a lot of experience and connections.
New York Fashion Week is a chance where designers, models, bloggers, influencers, and the who's who of fashion gather to see designers' fall collection. It's definitely a vibe you can feel throughout the city. While on the train in NY you knew it was fashion week by the street style.
People were able to express who they were style wise. During fashion week, it's ok to take risks, in fact it's encouraged. So, don't be shy and wear those bold silhouettes, daring styles and pops of colors.
However Since I'm a full time student at the moment I wasn't able to enjoy all NY had to offer for fashion week. But, I did manage to buy a bus ticket for a day trip.
One word to describe that day was incredible. Recently I heard someone say God doesn't push me but kicks me in fully and completely to the path I'm suppose to be going !
My mentor of three years Brandice Daniel invited me to help volunteer for Harlem's Fashion Row 10th Anniversary Fashion Show. This show was special and needed in our community, because it featured designers of color. Black designers are underrepresented in the fashion industry. Therefore HFR's fashion show highlights and puts these designers on display.
It was a gloomy Wednesday night, yet it didn't stop HFR's shine. HFR's supporters came out and showed out. The fashion show took place at La Marina an outside venue over looking the water, it was beautiful. I helped set up for the fashion show. Backstage began to fill with models who got ready with hair and makeup. The red carpet started to fill up with fashion moguls such as filmmaker Spike Lee, celebrity stylist Misa Hylton, celebrity stylist Wouri Vice, fashion editor of Essence Julee Wilson and many more fashion icons.
The start to a memorable evening started with the HFR style awards. These awards go to people in the fashion industry who are making strides to advance diversity in the fashion industry. The show honored legends like Spike Lee @officialspikelee, Claire Sulmers 0@clairesulmers (founder of @fashionbombdaily) , and @andradaymusic and @nnadibynature( fashion editor of @voguemagazine)
Then, before you know it, was showtime. Each designer brought something different to the runway. But they all I had something in common they wanted the women who choice to wear their pieces to feel beautiful.
I can't wait until next year, to experience the entire week.
